故事
一群猴子在林子里玩耍，它们有的在树上蹦蹦跳跳，有的在地上打打闹闹，好不快活。它们中的一只小猴独自跑到林子旁边的一口井旁玩耍，它趴在井沿，往井里边一伸脖子，忽然大叫起来：“不得了啦，不得了啦!月亮掉到井里去了!”原来，小猴看到井里有个月亮。
一只大猴听到叫声，跑到井边朝井里一看，也吃了一惊，跟着大叫起来：“糟了，糟了，月亮掉到井里去啦!”它们的叫声惊动了猴群，老猴带着一大群猴子都朝井边跑来。当它们看到井里的月亮时，都一起惊叫起来：“哎呀完了，哎呀完了!月亮真的掉到井里去了!”猴子们叽叽喳喳地叫着、闹着。最后，老猴说：“大家别嚷嚷了，我们快想办法把月亮捞起来吧!”众猴都义不容辞地响应老猴的建议，加入捞月的队伍中。
井旁边有一棵老槐树，老猴率先跳到树上，自己头朝下倒挂在树上，其他的猴子就依次一个一个你抱我的腿，我勾你的头，挂成一长条，头朝下一直深入井中。小猴子体轻，挂在最下边，它的手伸到井水中，都可以抓住月亮了。众猴想，这下我们总可以把月亮捞上来了。它们很是高兴。
小猴子将手伸到井水中，对着明晃晃的月亮一把抓起，可是除了抓住几滴水珠外，怎么也抓不到月亮。小猴这样不停地抓呀、捞呀，折腾了老半天，依然捞不着月亮。
倒挂了半天的猴们觉得很累，都有点支持不住了。有的开始埋怨说：“快些捞呀，怎么还没捞起来呢?”有的叫着：“妈呀，我挂不住啦!挂不住啦!”
老猴子也渐渐腰酸腿疼，它猛一抬头，忽然发现月亮依然在天上，于是它大声说：“不用捞了，不用捞了，月亮还在天上呢!”
众猴都抬头朝天上看，月亮果真好端端在天上呢。
由于众猴不了解井中月亮的真相，以假当真，所以空忙一气，又愚蠢又可笑。
出处
典出《法苑珠林·愚戆篇·杂痴部》：过去有一个伽师国，国内有一座波罗柰城。在城郊人迹稀少的森林中，生存着数百只猴子。一天晚上，这群猴嬉戏着来到了一口井旁。不知是哪只猴子先发现月影在井中一晃一晃，便大吃一惊：“不好了，月亮掉到井里去了！”一只年长的猴子一听，赶过来看了看井中的月亮，便对同伴们说：“月亮掉到井里，我们应该共同努力把它捞上来，免得叫世界上每个夜晚都黑沉沉的。”可怎么才能捞出月亮呢？那只年长的猴子一拍脑壳：“有办法了，我攀在树枝上，你们拽住我的尾巴，一个连一个，就可以捞出月亮了。”于是，那群猴便一个接一个，连成了一长串。可没想到连在一起的猴群太重了，树枝承受不住，在猴子快接近水面时“咔嚓”一声折断了，这群猴都掉到了井里。现如今，人们常用这则典故来告诫，如果庸人自扰，难免会招致灾祸。

There is an old locust tree next to the well. The old monkey first jumped to the tree and hung upside down on the tree. The other monkeys hung my legs one by one. The monkeys who had been hanging upside down for a long time felt very tired and could no longer support them. Some began to complain: “Hurry up and fish, why haven’t you fished yet?” Some cried, “Mom, I can’t hang it! I can’t hang it!”
The old monkey also gradually got sore waist and leg pain. He raised his head suddenly, and suddenly found that the moon was still in the sky, so he said loudly: “No need to fish, no need to fish, the moon is still in the sky!”
All the monkeys looked up to the sky, and the moon really stood in the sky.
Since the monkeys didn’t understand the truth about the moon in the well and took the falsehood as true, they were busy, stupid and ridiculous.

I don’t know which monkey first found the moon shadow in the well, and was taken aback: “It’s not good, the moon fell into the well!” Upon hearing this, an older monkey rushed over to look at the moon in the well, and he was right. The companions said: “The moon fell into the well. We should work together to get it up, lest every night in the world is darkened.” But how can we get the moon out? The older monkey patted his brain: “There is a way, I climbed on the branch, you can grab the moon by holding my tail, one by one.” So the group of monkeys one after another, Connected into a long string. Unexpectedly, the group of monkeys connected together was too heavy, and the branches could not bear it. When the monkeys were approaching the water surface, they snapped off with a click, and all the monkeys fell into the well. Nowadays, people often use this allusion to warn that if mediocre people disturb themselves, it will inevitably lead to disaster.
