The founding time of ancient Chinese timers was no later than the Warring States Period (476-222 BC). There are two main types of timepieces designed using mechanical principles. One type uses fluid mechanics for timekeeping, with engraved leaks and later hourglasses; the other type uses mechanical transmission structure for timekeeping, such as armillary spheres and water transport instruments.

In addition, there is also a sundial that uses astronomical principles (mostly measuring the time according to the direction of the sun’s shadow). It is also one of the oldest timepieces in China.
