A multi-variety and multi-series currency system has been formed, including paper money and metal coins, ordinary commemorative coins and precious metal commemorative coins. Except for the three coins of 1, 2 and 5 cents, the first, second and third sets of RMB have been withdrawn from circulation, and the fourth set of RMB has ceased circulation since May 1, 2018 (except for 1 jiao and 5 jiao banknotes and 5 jiao and 1 yuan coins). The RMB in circulation is mainly the fifth set of RMB issued in 1999, 2005, 2015, 2019 and 2020. The act of refusing to accept cash not only undermines the legal tender status of RMB, but also deprives consumers of the right to choose payment.

Issuance History

RMB is issued by the People’s Bank of China. When Chairman Mao Zedong reviewed the banknotes in 1952, he proposed that the arrangement of the bank names of RMB should be from left to right. Therefore, since 1953, the arrangement of “People’s Bank of China” on RMB has been changed to from left to right.

RMB cash is the national legal tender and the most basic and fundamental means of payment.
